Writ petition filed in High Court seeking permission to restart student politics in BUET
A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking permission to conduct student politics in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The writ petition was filed in the High Court's concerned division on Monday, April 1. A BUET student and Chhatra League leader Imtiaz Rabbi filed the writ.
The writ petitioner Barrister Harunur Rashid confirmed the matter.
He said that the petition sought the withdrawal of the notice that had been given to stop politics in BUET. Justice Md. Khasruzzaman's bench will hold a hearing in this regard at 1 pm.
BUET students boycotted the exam demanding a campus free of student politics. All but one student refrained from appearing in the 20th batch term final examination on Sunday, March 31.
Earlier in 2019, after Abrar Fahad was brutally killed by Chhatra League activists, student politics was banned in the institution in the face of student agitation. But within four years of that incident, Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling party has taken initiative to introduce student politics again in BUET. The ruling party Awami League also supports this. The Vice-Chancellor of BUET also said that student politics can be introduced again if the teachers and students want.
